Treatments for depression
The service is able to assess the suitability of a range of specialist treatments for depression. These include:
- Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS)
- Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)
Please note that VNS is not funded by National Service Scotland, and separate funding is required if this is a treatment that is either requested and/or recommended.
DBS for depression is not currently provided by the AIS as the evidence base to support DBS for treating depression is not sufficient to recommend its use. Information is provided here because people are often referred for consideration for suitability or they have requested it.
The AIS is able to provide specialist advice on the delivery of psychological therapies for people with depression. Although we cannot necessarily provide psychological treatment(s), we are able to work with local teams to ensure that people who may be progressing down a neurosurgical pathway are able to access appropriate forms of therapy.
